First game of spring

So Spring is here, and the desire to document lasertag adventures is back! After a very, very cold and long winter, the club made it’s way back onto the field for some much needed tag. We had eight show, and that was a nice size to get back in shape with. I took some photos, check them out here.

We ran the Scenario Master on a new HP Mini computer. Great form factor! We ran several games of Elimination, a Fox Hunt, and two attempts at Hostage Rescue. Highlights from those games:

Fox hunt: Devin was the fox, and the other 7 of us were hunters. With so little foliage out yet, I suspected this would be hard for the fox, but it is about 20 acres of woods... Well Devin was able to stay hidden and untouched for the whole 15 minutes. We canvassed the field back and forth, barking and yelping, trying to scare him out of hiding. But he did a great job, we must have walked past him many times. Upon later reflection, I think there are 3 possible scoring outcomes which are acceptable. In this game, no shots were fired and fox won slightly on points, beause he survived. Another logical outcome would be to have the scores even, but I suspect that the fox would take the draw rather than firing. The third outcome would be to have the fox lose if not shots were fired. But, if he landed one or two shots and survived he would win. This would force more action, but be less true to the name. What do you think?

Hostage Rescue: This one had the most contention surrounding it. The essence of the game is self explanatory, but the execution depends so very much on the field. Since the terrorists who had the hostage had no need to move, they camped out with outward firing patterns around the hostage. The rescuers had to move to recover the hostage, and therefore were at a severe disadvantage since you could hear and see them coming. In the first game the rescuers were slaughtered without landing a shot, since the terrorists holed up in southeast Green. In the second game we put the terrorists around the big tree, but they still have a huge firing advantage. The rescuers got the hostage, but the hostage and the rescuers were wiped out. I suspect that in summer with dense foliage, the terrorists will be sitting ducks instead, since you won’t be able to fire more than 20 feet. What do you think the next version of this game should be?
